There are many reasons that a butterfly could die. In the wild, only around 1 out of every 100 eggs laid by a female makes it to an adult butterfly. There are predators for a butterfly in every stage of life. While this does seem sad and unfair for the butterflies, if nature allowed any more eggs to survive, there would be overpopulation and not enough host food for the butterflies to survive.
